JESS CONFORTI
Biography:
Jess joined the Gallagher lab in 2020. She graduated from the University of Rochester in 2020 with a B.S. in Chemistry. Jess played collegiate softball and currently enjoys participating in CrossFit outside of lab!
Current Area:
Jess' research includes optimizing proteomics workflows to identify many proteins in complex biological samples. Since starting up proteomics experiments in the Gallagher lab, she has compared different sample clean-up techniques to determine methods that enable the highest number of identifications in MCF7 breast cancer subcellular fractions. Further, Jess has dove into proteomics database searching software algorithms and determined that the way that large-scale proteomics data is searched matters! These optimizations have allowed Jess to apply large-scale proteomics experiments towards important biological questions, including the impact of lysine demethylases on the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Along with her undergraduate student tribe, – consisting of Connor Breus, Hadden Swanzy, and Amanda Zielger – Jess is primarily working on a collaboration project with the Taube cancer biology lab at Baylor University to determine confidently identified methylated protein targets of a lysine demethylase in nuclear and membranous subcellular fractions of MCF7 breast cancer cells.
